The Lexington Opera Society and UK Opera Theatre are household words among the
arts patrons in the Bluegrass. The Lexington Opera Society (LOS) is a private, not-for-profit organization dedicated
to supporting and promoting opera in the Bluegrass and the University of Kentucky Opera Theatre. The organization
consists of a Board of Directors and a general membership category known as the
Bravo Guild.
The Lexington Opera Society produces an annual fund-raising event, Prelude to "It's A Grand Night For Singing." The
event, which has grown over the past several years into one of Lexington's most important and fun arts and wine tasting events, is held in the University of Kentucky Singletary Center and attracts a wide variety of party-goers for whom opera is a passion or
a novelty. The event is held on the Saturday of Memorial Day weekend.
LOS sponsors an annual 10-day Opera Workshop that provides intensive opera training
to selected students from around the country. The Workshop culminates in a scenes performance night in early June. Several of the workshop attendees become UK
students after experiencing the workshop.
LOS sponsors "Opera Goes to School", a program featuring performances by UK Opera students, past and present,
that is taken into schools all across the Commonwealth. The Fall 2006 production of Monkey See! Monkey Do!
was so successful that it was carried forward into early 2007 in order to reach more school children. A new
production, Freedom Trail, is scheduled for the Spring 2007 semester.
LOS hosts the popular Metropolitan Opera National Council District Auditions
each fall and the Regional Auditions every 3rd year.
LOS publishes a quarterly Newsletter highlighting upcoming events and
providing some "behind the scenes" articles related to the UK Opera Theatre and opera in the Bluegrass.
LOS sponsors the Opera Lecture Series, taught by Tedrin Blair Lindsay, at the Niles Gallery, UK Fine Arts Building for two hours on Saturday mornings during the school year.
